MTB Weekend Trips from Adelaide: 48 Hours in the Hills

Trail Guide South Australia Weekend Trip Planning

The lower carpark on Fox Creek Road fills before 9am on autumn Saturdays. EscapeGoat's shuttle van is already running uplifts to Croft Road, and the first riders down Blues Groove are back at the kiosk before the morning mist is off the pine trees. That's the 40-minute option — and it's the best day ride in South Australia. For a full weekend, the Hills give you more: three distinct parks within an hour of the CBD, each with its own character, plus a three-hour drive north to Melrose that rewards any rider who commits to it.

These are the best mtb weekend trips Adelaide riders should know — ranked by drive time.

What are the best mtb weekend trips from Adelaide for gravity riders?

Eagle MTB Park was Australia's first purpose-built mountain bike park, cut into an abandoned quarry above the South Eastern Freeway in Leawood Gardens — 20 minutes from Adelaide CBD, free to ride, and still home to the most varied gravity terrain in metropolitan SA. The hill covers 22 km of marked singletrack: a UCI-spec DH course (The Mixer — Nationals Line), a 4X track, a slopestyle and jump line, a pump track, and the Skills Development Park for riders still building confidence.

The terrain is quarry — hard rock, off-camber lines, tight switchbacks, sustained technical sections across 300+ m of descent on the full loop. Blue-grade riders get Tunnel Vision (2.4 km, the centrepiece flow trail), Blue Gums and Overlocker. Black riders get Hills Hoist, Sunset Boulevard and On The Verge. The Mixer is the actual National Championship DH course and earns the name. If you've been riding a year and want your first real DH run in SA, this is where most riders start — it's where most SA national-team riders came up too.

No commercial shuttle runs between events. Inside Line Downhill Mountain Bike Club organises uplift on race weekends; outside those days it's pedal-up from the Pastor Kavell Lookout carpark on Mt Barker Road. Tank water is on site; bring your own regardless of the season. Crafers township is five minutes away for coffee.

Is Craigburn Farm good for an Adelaide day ride?

Craigburn Farm is 13 km south of the CBD — pedallable from the city if you're keen, or a 25-minute drive to the southern foothills. The park sits inside Sturt Gorge Recreation Park; TrailScapes machine-built the 18 km loop network in three stages across 2011–2013, the first time a Sutter Trail Dozer was used in Australia. The brief was "Australia's premier gateway trail network" and it shows in the construction quality: fast, flowy contour singletrack through grey box grassy woodland, intermittent ancient tillite rock features for texture.

Almost everything is blue intermediate. Sidewinder (2.8 km) and Gunners Run (3 km) are the signatures; River Trail extends north 8 km into Sturt Gorge proper if you want a longer day out. Two short black sections — Craigberms and Sticks and Stones — break up the flow sections and reward riders with the skills to use them. The surface handles most weather reasonably well, getting slippery for a day after heavy rain but staying open.

Nothing on-site: no toilets, no water, no kiosk. Bring everything in. Cafés in Blackwood village are five minutes by car. Free parking at the end of Craigburn Road; overflow at Blackwood Football Club on Cummins Street.

Craigburn earns its spot in an Adelaide Hills weekend as a Saturday morning warm-up before Fox Creek, or a Sunday recovery lap on the way back into town. The full Sturt Gorge circumnavigation (~25 km) extends it into a proper half-day if the legs are willing.

Fox Creek Bike Park — the centrepiece of Adelaide Hills riding

The December 2019 Cudlee Creek bushfire took the original Fox Creek network — three decades of club-built singletrack — in a matter of hours. ForestrySA rebuilt it better: a planned gravity zone, a skills progression area, a proper facilities hub with a kiosk, toilets, showers and bike wash, and gravel connections that hadn't existed before. The park logged more than 120,000 visits in FY2023–24. It's 40 minutes from the CBD, entry is free, and the network runs 50-plus kilometres with 180 m of vertical.

The shuttle option is EscapeGoat Adventures — Saturday sessions 10:00–15:30 at $50 per person with unlimited uplifts, bookable online. It's the only standing public shuttle at Fox Creek; autumn weekends sell out. The Fox Run handles private group vehicle-shuttle charters (~$445 half-day) on any day of the week. Independent self-shuttling between the lower carpark on Fox Creek Road and the upper carpark off Croft Road at Lenswood is how most mid-week regulars run the park.

Blues Groove is the entry shuttle lap — blue-graded, but it carries real speed through linked berms all the way to the lower carpark. Patterson's Curse is the headline black, and the name is fair. F.A.M.E. and Fox Bowl give the gravity zone enough variety that experienced riders can lap a full day without running the same thing twice. Green Goblin Guts is the operator's pick for the best beginner gravity trail; Allen's Orange Whip, Phoenix and B-Rad are the park's three adaptive-accessible trails, all purpose-built for riders with mobility considerations.

Autumn (March–May) is the standard answer for best conditions, and it's right. The sand-and-gravel base of the rebuilt network drains well — most of the park is rideable within 24–48 hours of decent rain. Summer carries Total Fire Ban risk that can close the park at short notice; check forestrysa.com.au before driving out on a hot day.

Is Melrose worth the 3-hour drive from Adelaide?

The Remarkable Epic Trail opened in October 2023 — 38 km of backcountry loop, 1,300 m of climbing and a near-continuous 6 km descent designed by TrailScapes in consultation with the Nukunu Wapma Thura Aboriginal Corporation. Melrose has been building toward this kind of trail since 2002. It delivers.

Melrose sits ~270 km north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway, at the foot of Mount Remarkable in the Southern Flinders Ranges. Over The Edge Sports on Stuart Street is the on-the-ground base: café, bike hire, workshop, guided rides and current trail conditions from people who ride here daily (08 8666 2222). The 100-km network splits across two zones: about 80 km of hand-built singletrack on private landowner property accessed from town (the classic terrain — Hellrose, Throwing Copper, the Big Rhua, Hidden Valley, Bear Pit), plus 20 km of green and blue family-friendly trails inside Mount Remarkable National Park at Willowie Forest.

No commercial shuttle operates on the private land. OTE is specific about this: no dogs, no shuttling on the landowners' property. Build the riding day on pedal-up loops and reserve the Remarkable Epic for when you have a full day with good conditions. Don't start the Epic after midday; carry water for 4–6 hours and let someone know your expected return.

Two events define the calendar: the Fat Tyre Festival (June long weekend, running since 2002) and the 18/6 Hours of Melrose — which ran 28–30 August 2026 this year. Both fill accommodation months out. Plan early, or base in Port Pirie (45 minutes south) when the town is full.

The South Australia trails map shows the full Melrose network with difficulty grading.

How to string Adelaide's parks together

Hills quick two-dayer, no overnight: Eagle MTB Park on Saturday morning — gravity, pump track, pedal-up, done by noon. Fox Creek in the afternoon — get there before EscapeGoat's session closes at 15:30. Drive time between the two parks is about 25 minutes via the Hills Face zone roads. Both are CBD day-trip range; no accommodation needed.

Fox Creek full weekend: Drive up Friday evening and base in Lobethal or Lenswood, 10 minutes from the upper carpark. Saturday EscapeGoat shuttle session (book ahead; sells out in autumn). Sunday morning XC loops or the 17.4 km Rabble Gravel loop before the drive home. Craigburn Farm is a clean Sunday recovery lap on the way back through Blackwood.

Melrose long weekend: Thursday night or early Friday drive north. Two nights in Melrose — the caravan park at the showgrounds has showers, the Melrose Hotel has food, and the holiday cottages on the main street handle overflow. Friday afternoon shakedown on the shorter Melrose town trails. Full day Saturday: Remarkable Epic if conditions and legs are right, the Hellrose–Throwing Copper–Big Rhua loop as the solid fallback. Sunday shorter trails before the 3-hour drive back. June long weekend for the Fat Tyre Festival if you want the full event context.

FAQ

How far are the nearest MTB parks from Adelaide CBD? Eagle MTB Park is about 20 minutes south-east in Leawood Gardens — 22 km including the Mixer DH course, 4X track, jump line and pump track, free, sunrise to sunset. Craigburn Farm is 25 minutes south in the Sturt Gorge foothills — 18 km of XC flow loops, also free. Both are within easy day-trip range with no accommodation needed.

Is there a shuttle at Fox Creek Bike Park? EscapeGoat Adventures runs the only standing public shuttle — Saturday sessions 10:00–15:30, $50 per person for unlimited uplifts, bookable online. Autumn weekends sell out; book as soon as you know the date. The Fox Run runs private group vehicle-shuttle charters on any day (~$445 half-day). There is no chairlift at Fox Creek — all uplift is by vehicle. Independent self-shuttling between the lower and upper carparks is also common.

What is the Remarkable Epic Trail in Melrose? A 38 km backcountry loop above Melrose in the Southern Flinders Ranges, opened October 2023. It climbs 1,300 m with a near-continuous 6 km descent, taking 4–6 hours at a solid intermediate pace. Designed by TrailScapes in consultation with the Nukunu Wapma Thura Aboriginal Corporation. No departure after midday; carry full water and food; tell someone your expected return. It's the main reason riders drive 3 hours from Adelaide to Melrose.

When is the best time of year to ride the Adelaide Hills? Autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November). Fox Creek, Eagle and Craigburn all drain reasonably well after rain. Summer (December–February) brings Total Fire Ban risk that can close all three Hills parks on short notice — check the CFS Mt Lofty Ranges district before heading out on any hot day. EscapeGoat's Fox Creek shuttle runs Saturdays year-round (conditions allowing), and Eagle and Craigburn are free pedal-up venues any day the park is open.

Is Melrose suitable for beginner riders? The Willowie Forest network inside Mount Remarkable National Park has 20 km of green and blue family-friendly trails — proper beginner terrain, not just truncated versions of harder stuff. The Melrose town trails and the Remarkable Epic run intermediate to advanced. Over The Edge Sports has a hire fleet and can steer first-timers to the right section of the network for their level.

Is there accommodation near Fox Creek Bike Park? Lobethal and Lenswood are 10–15 minutes from the upper carpark and have holiday cottages and B&Bs. Hahndorf, Balhannah and Oakbank are 20–30 minutes away with the full Adelaide Hills wine-region accommodation spread. Fox Creek is also an easy day trip from the CBD — 40 minutes each way means no overnight stay needed. For Melrose, book early: the Fat Tyre Festival (June long weekend) and the 18/6 Hours (August) both fill accommodation months in advance. The Melrose Caravan Park and holiday houses on the main street are the first options; Port Pirie (45 minutes south) is the backup.
