Snakes on the Trail: What Australian Mountain Bikers Need to Know
Most riders go years without an incident. Some go decades. And then one spring morning you come around a blind corner at pace and there's a metre and a half of Eastern Brown draped across the trail like a garden hose.
Snakes on MTB trails in Australia aren't a rare occurrence — they're a seasonal reality. The window from October through to late March is when Australia's venomous species are most active, which maps almost perfectly onto peak riding months in the south and year-round in the north. Knowing what to expect, how to read a snake's behaviour, and what to do if someone is bitten is the kind of thing worth settling before you need it.

Which snakes will you actually encounter on Australian trails?
Australia has more venomous terrestrial snakes than any other country. The species you'll cross paths with depends heavily on your riding location.

The Eastern Brown is the one riders see most often. It moves fast, tends to be on open ground and fire roads, and it's the species responsible for more fatalities per year in Australia than any other. It's also more assertive than most — when crowded, it can rear and spread a hood before striking. If you see that display, you've already come too close. Back up slowly.
Tiger snakes are heavy and slow by comparison, which means they're often still there when you roll up on them. They dominate wherever there's water: creek crossings throughout Victoria and Tasmania, the Otways, the Grampians. In alpine zones above about 1,200 m — Mt Buller, Falls Creek, Kosciuszko, the ACT highlands — the Highland Copperhead is the main species. They come out later in the day as the air warms up, so early laps at altitude are lower risk.
When are snakes active on Australian MTB trails?
October to March covers the main active window for most of Australia. The ACT Government records the season formally as October to March. CSIRO research published in 2024 noted that warm winters are pushing activity earlier — some years southern snakes are appearing on trails in mid-September when historically they'd still be dormant.
By species and timing:
- Eastern Brown: most active through spring (October–November mating season), then feeding hard December–February
- Tiger Snake: active through the warm months; mating peaks December into January
- Highland Copperhead: later to warm up — in alpine zones expect peak activity from November onwards, not October
- Death Adder: active from October; in Queensland and the Northern Territory, effectively year-round
Time of day matters as much as time of year. Snakes thermoregulate by moving between sun and shade. Early morning is high-risk — they come out to bask and warm up. Late afternoon too. On a 35-degree midday, they're usually sheltering under rocks and logs and out of your way. On mild overcast days they can be active for most of the day.
Treat September as the start of snake season, not October. The northern half of Australia is already warm by then, and in a mild autumn year, riders in NSW and VIC are already calling it on social channels by late September.
What to do when you see a snake on the trail
Nine times out of ten, it moves before you get close. Snakes detect ground vibration and take off long before you round the corner. The times you actually see one are usually when it's basking on something warm — a flat rock, the timbers of a bridge, a stretch of open trail in full sun — and didn't register your approach.
Slow down or stop. Don't try to swerve over it. A moving bike is an unpredictable threat, and the snake will react.
Give it space. Most snakes given 3–4 metres of clearance will move off on their own. Stand still or move back slowly. No sudden movements.
Wait it out. If it's not leaving, give it a minute. If you need to pass, go around with maximum clearance — off the trail edge if needed. Do not crowd it.
Tell the riders behind you. Spin around or yell. The last thing anyone needs is the next rider coming in hot around the same corner two minutes later.
Don't touch it. Don't prod it with your bike, your pump, your helmet or anything else. A significant proportion of bites in Australia happen because someone tried to handle or move a snake. If it looks dead on the trail, still don't touch it — reflex bites from recently-killed snakes are documented.
Snake bite first aid on the trail: the step-by-step
This is the one you need to know before you need it. Australia's pressure-immobilisation protocol, developed by Professor Struan Sutherland at CSL in the 1970s, is recommended by St John Australia and ANZCOR for all land snake bites. It works because Australian snake venom travels via the lymphatic system, not the bloodstream — pressure and immobilisation slow that movement dramatically.
1. Stop immediately and get the bitten person off their bike. Sitting or lying down, not moving.
2. Keep them still and calm. Panic raises heart rate. A higher heart rate speeds lymphatic circulation. The goal is to keep both as low as possible.
3. Apply a compression bandage firmly over the bite site. Use a broad elasticised bandage — 10–15 cm wide. Start at the bite and wrap over it. Pressure should be firm enough that you can't easily slide a finger under the bandage, but not so tight it cuts off circulation. Think "strapping a sprained ankle", not a tourniquet.
4. Apply a second bandage from the furthest point upward. If the bite is on the lower leg, start from the toes and wrap up the leg as high as the bandage reaches. This slows the movement of venom up through the lymph vessels toward the core.
5. Immobilise the limb with a splint. Use whatever's available — a stick, a pump, a frame tube. Strap it in place. The limb should not bend or move.
6. Call 000. Do this as soon as the bandage is on — ideally while a second rider handles the bandaging. Tell the operator where you are: trail name, park name, nearest trailhead, and GPS coordinates if you have them. Every Australian park with a significant visitor count has emergency coordinates on Trailforks and AllTrails.
7. Note the time and mark the bite site. Write on the bandage or on the skin with a marker: the time the bite occurred, and an arrow indicating the location under the bandage. Hospital staff need this.
8. Do not remove the bandage. The bandage is trapping venom near the bite site. Removing it releases it into the system at once. The hospital cuts it off in a controlled environment after antivenin is ready.
9. Do not let the bitten person ride for help. Send a second rider if you have one. The bitten person stays put and stays still. Riding out is how people die — physical exertion is the fastest way to accelerate venom absorption.
What NOT to do
These are common instincts that make things worse:
- Do not cut the bite or try to suck out venom. It does nothing useful and risks infection.
- Do not apply a tourniquet. Concentrating venom in a limb damages tissue and makes outcomes worse.
- Do not wash the bite site. Hospital staff swab the skin around the bite to identify the specific venom type. Washing destroys that sample and can delay the correct antivenin by hours.
- Do not apply ice or cold packs. No evidence of benefit; risk of cold injury.
- Do not try to catch or identify the snake. Australia has a polyvalent snake antivenin that covers most of the major species. Sending someone back to find the snake is a reliable way to get a second bite victim. The swab from the bite site does the identification.
- Do not give alcohol or pain medication before hospital. Alcohol dilates blood vessels; aspirin thins blood. Neither helps.
What to carry in snake season
From September to April, these go in the pack on every ride:
Two elasticised compression bandages, 10–15 cm wide. One for the bite site, one for the limb. Purpose-made snake bite bandages (longer, with a tension indicator printed on them) are better than generic crepe. Anaconda, BCF, and any pharmacy stock them for a few dollars. They weigh under 100 g and take up less space than a spare tube.
A marker pen. Small enough to tuck into a pack pocket. Used to write the time and mark the bite location on the bandage after a bite.
A charged phone with GPS enabled. Before heading out on remote trails, download the offline map in Trailforks or AllTrails. If you're in a coverage black spot, a Garmin inReach satellite communicator means 000 is reachable even when your phone isn't.
Riding with at least one other person. The bite response above assumes a second rider applies the bandage and makes the call while the bitten person stays still. Solo riding in remote trails is a risk calculation that shifts significantly in snake season. If you do ride solo, tell someone your route and expected return time.
