Bells Gully (Prospect Hill) MTB Trail head car park
Overview
Bells Gully — better known to local riders as Prospect Hill — is a 30+ trail XC singletrack network laid out through the pine plantations of Kuitpo Forest in the Adelaide Hills, around 60–65 minutes south of the Adelaide CBD. It's a long-running ForestrySA mountain-bike area that the Adelaide Mountain Bike Club (AMBC) uses as one of its main race venues (Sunday Shenanigans XC races, junior events).
Riding is unsignposted singletrack through pine — fast, flowy, low-consequence terrain with rolling climbs and a handful of slightly longer descents (CHFR Trail is the longest at ~2.7 km with ~85 m of climbing; Sunday Shenanigans gives back ~44 m of descent). The network suits beginners through intermediate XC riders; advanced riders use it for fitness and lap circuits rather than gravity laps. There are no jump lines, skills areas, or pump tracks at the trailhead — for that, riders head to Fox Creek (ForestrySA's flagship Adelaide MTB park) or Eagle Park.
Because there's no signage, a GPS / Trailforks file is effectively mandatory on a first visit. Most riders park at the small dirt pull-in on Brookman Conner Rd opposite Gate BG9, cross the road, and pick up the network from there.
Location & Access
- Address (trailhead car park): Brookman Conner Rd, opposite Gate BG9, Prospect Hill SA (Kuitpo Forest).
- Coordinates: -35.2487, 138.6953 (already in DB).
- From Adelaide CBD: ~50 km / 60–65 min via South Eastern Fwy → Mt Barker Rd → Meadows → Brookman Rd → Christmas Hill Rd → Brookman Conner Rd. The final approach climbs a short steep pinch off Christmas Hill Rd before flattening onto Brookman Conner.
- From Meadows township: ~10 min south-east; Meadows has the closest cafés / bakery for pre- or post-ride food.
- Parking: Small unsealed pull-in, dirt surface, room for ~8–10 cars. No marked bays, no shelter, no facilities.
- Public transport: None practical — no bus service to the trailhead. Closest service is to Meadows; you'd still need to ride or drive the remaining 10 km.
Best Season & Conditions
- Year-round during daylight hours.
- Summer (Nov–Mar): Hot, dry, fire-risk dependent. Forest is closed to the public on declared Total Fire Ban days (ForestrySA policy). Avoid hot/windy summer afternoons — exposed pine litter, no water, and fire risk is non-trivial. Fires are prohibited on ForestrySA land from 1 Nov – 30 Apr (dates can extend).
- Autumn / Winter / Spring: Prime riding window. Pine needles drain quickly so trails ride well even after rain, though deeper wet spells can leave clay sections greasy.
- Forestry operations: Logging / thinning closes individual trails periodically. Trailforks region status currently shows 2 of 30 closed (May 2026). Always check Trailforks before driving out.
Managing Body & Trail Builders
- Land manager: ForestrySA (statutory corporation managing SA government plantation forests). Kuitpo Forest is 3,600 ha, est. 1898, first plantation forest in the SA system.
- Trail association / maintenance: Adelaide Mountain Bike Club (AMBC) — formed 1989, ~180 members, largest XC provider in SA. Trailforks listings explicitly call out AMBC as the local trail association and ask riders to join / donate to support trail work.

History & Background
- Kuitpo Forest established 1898 — the original SA government plantation, set up to secure a sustainable timber supply.
- The Bells Gully MTB network grew organically as AMBC and Adelaide riders pushed singletrack into the working pine compartments. Trails are opened and re-opened as compartments are thinned and replanted, so the network shifts on a multi-year cycle.
- AMBC has used the Prospect Hill area as one of its core XC race venues for over a decade — the "Prossies" round of the AMBC summer / XCO series. Gravity Girls SA also runs club rides here.
Recent News & Updates
- 2026: Trailforks region status reports trails progressively reopening after thinning operations, with 2 closures remaining (out of 30) as of May 2026.
- AMBC racing: Prospect Hill continues to feature in the AMBC race calendar; Gravity Girls SA junior rides have run here recently (e.g. "Club Ride | Prospect Hill MTB Trails" event series).
- No known major land-use change, ownership shift, or trail re-build announced for 2025–2026.
